The Story Behind Heart of the City (Why We Do It).

Mission Statement: The Heart of the City Improvement Corporation, a not-for-profit organization in pursuit to improve & revitalize a healthy and vibrant Heart of the City urban core thru private and public interest

The Heart of the City Improvement Corp, Inc. (HOTC) was established to revitalize the city’s inner center commercial district & aesthetic look through physical redevelopment
and attraction of new retail
and entertainment venues. Venues like the Buda Bar & Espana attract a more affluent clientele. McAllen Chamber of Commerce’s beautiful building, the historic recent renovated Renaissance Casa de Palmas and Nuevo Santander Gallery’s Mediterranean look influence architectural support for the area and reflect McAllen history and heritage. The new bus terminal and decorative lights along downtown’s sidewalk reflect on our historic buildings that encompass the flow of culture by way of styles and materials that ever define McAllen’s past. This creativity and uniqueness fabricate our rich history with workmanship through our local heritage. HOTC’s presence signifies & designates a higher level of preservation commitment. 
 
With the new approved multilevel garage, recent community meetings like La Paloma district at the Mc2 incubator, seeking local investment support thru low interest loans, ordinances downtown for residential living above business, creation of downtown night life & HOTC website, one can access the blueprint of progress thru the city’s own website mcallen.net/planning/docs/heartofthecity. All of this for the board’s vision to fit into the bigger picture of the city’s future!

In the mean time one can get a glimpse of the past…just hop onto 17th street and visualize 100 year old McAllen thru a mural depicting the time of essence. The Heart of the City will assist to rehabilitate old structures, develop an entertainment mix of restaurants district new land uses, attract more international shoppers and create “entrance gateways” to downtown. Infusion of all arts will also entail inclusion of success.

HOTC realizes the vitality of the heart of the city area is essential to the economic health of the entire city & region.  HOTC will not only become a powerful economic development instrument but will assist to seek government support at all levels to take part in economic actions/legislations to encourage redevelopment. The goals of our efforts will enhance property values, increase sales tax revenues, create employment in the construction industry, creating jobs, improving civic image, attracting tourist and stemming crime declination.

In turn, HOTC will become a development management company providing services as security, maintenance, marketing, leasing, renovation, and infrastructure improvements for the urban core.

The destination of this organization will create opportunity for the city like no other.  In doing so we will be able to create a Main Street Program,   trolley system, tax credits, arts culture mecca for the R.G.V., possible covered/shaded

main street, historic museum, anchors to support & attract new businesses, merchants, property owners, residential & arts associations, high rise condos/lofts, parks, eateries, etc.
