A ‘Sixth Street’ for McAllen? Group wants to develop downtown entertainment district

City planners are hoping a section of downtown McAllen will one day become as popular as Sixth Street in Austin.

McAllen’s Heart of the City Improvement Corporation is trying to transform the downtown portion of 17th Street into an entertainment district.

It will be your one stop for cuisine, cocktails and culture.

Though that may be a long shot, Heart of the City officials said they are committed to offering prospective business owners incentive to move to downtown.

Jorge Salcines with McAllen Sports agreed.

“This brings the public to the street, it brings life to the street,” Salcines said. “This used to be the center of McAllen 40 or 50 years ago. It will be again.”
